Common Questions & Answers About Ski & Snowboard Lessons
1. What should my child wear to their lesson?
Dress in warm, waterproof layers. Students should wear base layers (no cotton), an insulating mid layer, a waterproof jacket and pants, gloves or mittens, one pair of ski socks, goggles, and a helmet. A neck gaiter is recommended.
2. Do students need a helmet?
Yes. Helmets are required for all students in Dry Hill lessons. They must fit properly, be buckled, and be worn at all times while on snow.
3. Do I need to rent equipment before the lesson?
Yes. Please arrive early to get fitted for rentals before the lesson starts. This ensures your full lesson time is spent on the snow, not in the rental shop. We recommend allowing at least 30 minutes.
4. How early should we arrive?
We recommend arriving 30–45 minutes early, especially on weekends, to allow time for parking, check-in, rentals, and bathroom breaks.
5. Should parents stay with their child during the lesson?
Parents are welcome to watch from nearby, but instructors ask that parents do not follow the group. Kids learn best when they can focus on their instructor without distraction.
6. What if my child is nervous or cries?
This is very common. Our instructors are trained to help anxious beginners feel comfortable. A quick goodbye works better than a lingering one. Most kids settle in within minutes once the lesson starts.
7. Can my child be in the same group as a friend or sibling?
We accommodate requests, but groups are formed based on age and ability to ensure safety and appropriate instruction. Keeping students with similar skills helps everyone progress faster.
8. What happens during the lesson?
Depending on skill level, lessons typically include:
-How to put on and remove equipment
-Sliding, stopping, and turning
-Riding the surface lift or chairlift
-Safe skiing and snowboarding habits
-Fun games to build confidence and skills
9. Do lessons include a lift ticket?
This varies by program. Many beginner packages include a limited-area ticket. Check your specific program details or ask the ticket office.
10. Can my child ride the chairlift during the lesson?
Yes, once the instructor determines they are ready. Beginners often start on the small hill before progressing to the chairlift.
11. What if the weather is bad?
We teach in most winter weather—snow is great for lessons! Lessons may be paused or canceled only in extreme cold or unsafe conditions. Any changes will be communicated as early as possible.
12. What if my student needs to use the bathroom?
Instructors will escort young students to meet a parent or trained staff member. Please encourage bathroom breaks before the lesson begins.
13. Should my child bring snacks or water?
Snacks are fine, but please keep them in a jacket pocket. Water breaks will happen naturally between activities; students do not carry backpacks.
14. What if my child has never skied or snowboarded before?
Perfect! Beginner lessons are designed for first-timers. No experience is needed.
15. Do you offer private lessons?
Yes. Private lessons offer one-on-one attention and often result in faster skill development. They are great for students who prefer individualized instruction.
16. How long does it take to learn?
Every student learns at their own pace. Most first-timers leave their first lesson knowing how to slide, stop, and make basic turns. Multiple lessons lead to greater confidence and control.
17. What if my child has special needs or learning considerations?
Please let us know in advance so we can provide the best instructor and support. Our goal is an inclusive, positive learning experience for every student.
